

A button supplier scorecard turns a subjective trim decision into a documented sourcing decision. For an apparel team, the lowest quoted unit price or the most polished sample image is rarely enough. The supplier must be able to interpret the specification, develop the required material and finish, control repeatability, and support bulk delivery against the garment program.
A useful scorecard does not assume every button program has the same priorities. A logo metal button for outerwear, a dyed resin shirt button, and a natural corozo button for tailored apparel carry different development risks. The scorecard should reflect the actual garment, sales channel, order volume, care requirements, and launch date.
What a Button Supplier Scorecard Should Measure
The purpose is not to find a theoretically perfect supplier. It is to identify which supplier is most capable of producing the specified button with acceptable risk for the current program. That means measuring development capability alongside commercial and production readiness.
Start with a weighted score out of 100. The weights should change when the program changes, but the following structure gives product developers and sourcing teams a practical starting point.

A supplier can score well on visual sampling yet score poorly on production planning. That is a warning, not a minor administrative issue. A button may look correct in a small sample run while still carrying unresolved risks around dye-lot variation, plating appearance, engraving depth, shell pattern, resin color consistency, or packing protection.
Build the Scorecard From a Production-Ready Brief
A scorecard can only be as reliable as the information issued to suppliers. A mood board, sketch, or digital render may communicate design intent, but it is not a production-ready button specification. Before requesting a quotation or sample, define the points that affect manufacturing.
For most custom button projects, this includes the material or acceptable material alternatives; diameter in millimeters and, where relevant, Ligne; thickness; hole count, shank type, or fixed-back construction; color reference; finish level; logo artwork; placement; and intended garment use. State whether the button is decorative, functional, or both. A front closure button, for example, may need more scrutiny than a small cuff button because its construction and attachment conditions differ.
The brief should also identify the target quantity by style and color, the sample deadline, the bulk delivery window, packing requirements, and the destination or delivery arrangement. If a program has wash, dry-cleaning, abrasion, corrosion, pull-strength, restricted-substance, or other performance expectations, define the required scope early. Whether a particular material or construction can meet those expectations must be confirmed for the actual product and order.
When comparing suppliers, assess not only whether they say they can make the button, but how they respond to incomplete or conflicting information. A capable supplier will often identify decisions that still need approval: whether the logo needs a new tool, whether Pantone is a visual target rather than an exact material match, whether a horn-like appearance requires an alternative material, or whether the selected construction is suitable for the intended use.
Score Technical Questions, Not Just Answers
The best sourcing conversations include useful questions. If a supplier immediately confirms every request without discussing material limitations, tooling, finishing, or sampling, the team may not yet have enough information to judge feasibility.
Assign higher scores when the supplier distinguishes clearly between an initial concept and a confirmed manufacturing route. For example, a supplier should be able to explain whether a debossed logo is produced by molding, stamping, machining, or laser marking, and how that choice may affect edge definition, color application, cost, and repeatability.
Evaluate the Physical Sample Correctly
A physical sample is the central evidence in a button supplier scorecard. Images can help review logo placement and broad appearance, but they do not reliably show hand feel, edge finishing, hole quality, thickness, surface texture, weight, or color behavior under different lighting.
Review samples against an agreed reference rather than personal impression alone. Check diameter, thickness, hole or shank construction, logo legibility, finish consistency, and visual alignment. For dyed or colored buttons, compare the sample under the lighting conditions relevant to the brand’s approval process. A Pantone reference is useful, but material type, gloss level, texture, translucency, and base color can change the perceived result.
Natural materials need a different approval approach. Corozo, horn, shell, wood, and similar materials can show inherent variation in grain, tone, pattern, and surface character. The scorecard should record what variation is acceptable and what must remain controlled. Trying to eliminate all natural variation may be incompatible with the material’s character, while accepting too much variation can create inconsistent garment appearance.
Do not approve a sample simply because it is attractive. Ask whether it represents the intended bulk method. A hand-finished development sample may not predict the exact appearance of a large production run. The supplier should clarify which elements are representative, which are still under development, and whether any change in tooling, finish, material source, or color process is expected before bulk production.
Check Quality Control Before Placing the Order
Quality control is easier to evaluate when buyers define their acceptance criteria. “Good quality” cannot be inspected consistently. The scorecard should look for a supplier’s ability to work from agreed standards covering dimensions, visual defects, color range, logo position, hole cleanliness, shank condition, finish coverage, and packing condition.
For custom programs, approve a reference sample or signed specification that can be used during production review. Where appropriate, include defect examples or a written description of unacceptable conditions, such as sharp edges, incomplete logo marking, chipped coating, blocked holes, uneven plating appearance, or visible contamination. The criteria should fit the selected material and finish rather than applying one standard to every button type.
Also assess traceability in practical terms. Can the supplier identify the approved version of the artwork, sample, color reference, and packing instruction? Can a production question be connected to a purchase order, style, size, and finish? These controls reduce confusion when multiple button colors or garment styles are running at once.
Compare MOQ and Lead Time as Program Variables
MOQ and lead time should not be entered as fixed supplier attributes on a scorecard. They depend on material, size, construction, logo method, tooling, color development, order quantity, and production schedule. A stock-size resin button with a simple color treatment may follow a different path from a newly tooled metal shank button with a custom finish.
Score suppliers on the clarity of their planning. A useful production plan separates artwork confirmation, material review, tooling if required, sample development, sample approval, bulk production, quality review, packing, and delivery arrangements. This makes it easier to see where the critical path sits.
The same approach applies to MOQ. Instead of asking only for a minimum quantity, ask what drives it. It may be tied to material procurement, setup, tooling, plating, dyeing, production batch size, or packing format. Understanding the reason helps teams decide whether to adjust the design, consolidate colors, revise quantities, or accept a different commercial structure.
Use the Scorecard After Awarding the Program
The scorecard should continue after supplier selection. Update it when samples are approved, bulk production starts, inspections are completed, and deliveries are received. This creates a supplier record based on actual performance rather than first impressions.
For repeat programs, track whether button dimensions remained within the agreed range, whether color and finish matched the approved reference, whether documents were controlled correctly, and whether issues were communicated early enough to protect the garment schedule. A supplier’s willingness to flag a production risk before shipment is often more valuable than a late explanation after the factory line has stopped.
